SENSITIVE ISSUES part 1

Assalamualaikum dear readers :)

So, what are we going to share with you guys this week?

Well, today we are going to share our OWN experience regarding these three SENSITIVE situations. Guess what it is about by looking at the pictures below yeah! Jeng jeng jeng!...

STEREOTYPE

PREJUDICE

DISCRIMINATION
*credits to Google Images for the pictures*

Don't you think these 3 things are very confusing? People tend to think they're all the same, so we are here today to tell you how they differ from each other okay!

1. STEREOTYPE: a belief or idea of what a particular type of person or thing is like. It is                 often  UNFAIR and UNTRUE. (can be positive/negative)
Example: All Asians are good at Math.

2. PREJUDICE: DISLIKING someone because of affiliation with group.
Example: Muslims are terrorists.

3. DISCRIMINATION: UNFAIR treatment of DIFFERENT categories of people on the grounds of  RACE, GENDERAGE, etc.
Example: Some Americans won't let Muslims shop at their place.

I am sure that most of us have experienced being stereotyped and such right? Well, to be honest, I (Atirah) sometimes do that to people too, whether I realized it or not. For example, back then before I took ENCOM, I was always pissed off with people who prefer to speak English than using their own mother tongue. I value people who speak their mother tongue with their own people because for me, we all should be proud of our language. So, to me, those Malay people who speak English are just showing off!  (⇀‸↼‶)

*please excuse my narrow- mindedness* But hey, that was back then! Well, I admit that sometimes I have a prejudice towards someone, and that is something that I am trying hard to get rid off!

Syuhaidah: Go, Atirah!

...and, unfortunately I was stereotyped too, and more unfortunately...by MY OWN FATHER (⊙_⊙) *hahahahahaha*

Since I am taking communication, my father has a high expectation on me. For instance, whenever we got lost, I will be the one who needs to ask people around for directions...because I'm a communication student, and that I should apply my communication skills (¬_¬ ).

That is actually one of my greatest fears because I am often forgetful. So I'm afraid that if I'm the one asking for directions, I might forget the information and might give a wrong direction instead! Another stereotype that I often get is that people often think I am still a high schooler, because of my 'young' looks! *flips shawl* People will often ask me questions like "Which grade are you in?" or "Which school do you go to?". It is a positive stereotype though, so I do not mind about it much hehe!

Well, that's my story. What's yours? Feel free to share your opinion or experience/s in the comment box!

Our Beautiful Friend ~

Assalamualaikum and hello, guys and girls!
*credits to chinesefontdesign.com*

You know, being a student of International Islamic University Malaysia really does has its perks. The required courses that we have to take would usually give us a chance to befriend others from different parts of the world. As for me (Syuhaidah), during my Leadership class, I met a friend from Laos. Her name is Souphaphone Chueangmanivong, but we all call her Maryam.

This is where Laos is in the world map..

..and these are Laos (in green) and Malaysia (in orange)

Quick info: the Leadership course required us to conduct an event, and to make a long story short, my classmates and I decided to bring some children to PetroSains for a fun educational trip. Each of us was assigned with one kid and I realized that Maryam was very excited and happy to spend time with the lovely kids! She kept on taking selfies with the them! It was really cute because they all looked so gleeful! Ah, such good memories..  ( ´ ▽ ` )

A few months passed...

Then, I thought to myself..

"Hmm, I don't really know much about Laos or its culture.."

Henceforth, when we were told that we need to find an international friend to exchange information about cultures, I immediately thought of Maryam! And thank God, Maryam agreed to help us (Atirah and I)! The three of us will be meeting this Tuesday (insyaAllah) to start our mission!  (o^▽^o)

FWF! #2

Assalamualaikum and Hello!

For this week's FWF!, we will share self-written poems and self-drawn portraits of ourselves.
If you are wondering, "where is the fact in this post?" Well, the fact is: both of us are bad at drawing self-portraits! Our portraits look NOTHING like us!  (⇀‸↼‶)
But, when it comes to writing poems, we (think) are not THAT bad...

You be the judge  (*˘︶˘*)

Behold...

I am

My voice is loud,
As if I swallowed the mic.

My nickname is 'Jemah',
That's what they call me.

I'm a conventional 21 year old,
Who is neither petite nor gigantic.

I am cute like a hamster too,
That's who I am.

________________________________

I am

I am nothing but a believer,
So I believe;
I was destined for something great.

But they kept telling me 'NO!',
So I made myself deaf,
and searched for greatness.

Along with people who believe in me;
I marched forward,
with all that I have.

And my marching won't stop,
till the day I'm called upon,
by my Lord.

FWF! #1

Assalamualaikum! Hey, everyone! It's time for FWF! (Fun Weekly Fact!)

*credits to chinesefontdesign.com*

*For your information, every week we will try to update FWF! and share something special with you.

This week we will talk about ourselves, so please... please bear with us!  (✧ω✧)

*collage made on fotor.com!*

So, we will first start with the Fabulous Atirah :P ehem ehem... I am the one wearing green in the picture collage above, and also, the one standing with an umbrella. Born and raised in Kuala Lumpur, playing video games was one of my hobbies. However, I do enjoy climbing trees and searching for grasshoppers. I do play traditional games such as 'congkak' and 'batu seremban', but being the only daughter in the family, I (forced myself) played alone most of the time HAHA! Well, I have my eldest brother at home, but since he is a loner, I have no other choice but to play alone  ┐( ̄ヘ ̄)┌

Basically, my life is just ordinary...

Oh wait! I just remembered something! My mother used to tell me that when she had her first child (my eldest brother), my maternal grandmother and great grandmother told my parents that my brother MUST sleep on a TRAY with seven layers of 'kain batik' and underneath all of that, they will put uncooked rice. One layer of kain batik will be taken out, day by day until the seventh day. Then, the rice will be made into porridge to be served to the whole family.

Syuhaidah: That's very interesting, Atirah!  (♡゚▽゚♡)

Anyway, I'll now proceed with myself. My name is Syuhaidah and just like Atirah, I am from Kuala Lumpur. My mom is from Negeri Sembilan and my dad is from Selangor. As a kid, I played a lot of indoor games with my siblings. Of course, (same 'ol...) video games are included in the list as well... Oh! Atirah and I have a friend from Kelantan who said that her childhood games involve mud and trees. Ahh, how I wished I could have exchanged place with her then (even for one day)!

Anyway, when I entered kindergarten, I did not know how to befriend fellow human beings. Even worse, I was bullied - but, let's not talk about that. Henceforth, I 'made' my own friend and his name is 'Dabak'. I wish I can meet him again one day... My hobbies include reading, especially Japanese comics (manga). I used to only listen to indie music, but now, I listen to Korean songs as well. My favourite food is American and Italian food (hamburger and pizza!).

Honestly, I am not someone who comes from a family that practices distinct, regional culture. But, I do find cultures interesting and I am curious to learn more about them (as you can see from my interests above hehe).

That's all for this week. Thank you for reading! Do look forward to the next FWF!

Atirah & Syuhaidah

Culture and Stereotypes

HELLO! Jumuah Mubarak :)

Assalamualaikum and hi everyone! Check out this video above, okay! It is definitely worth watching  o( ❛ᴗ❛ )o

(It's only 19 minutes long...)

(okay, 19 minutes and 58 seconds... only.)  ʕ •ᴥ• ʔ

Anyway, the video above features Mr. Pellegrino Riccardi sharing his experience on cross cultural communication and interaction. Below is a statement made by Mr. Riccardi;
“People see what they want to see, they don’t always see what you see.”
(like this cute, little cat below)

Little cat: I am not little! Hear my majestic roar!!!
*credits to Google Images*

Mr. Riccardi believes that people have different ideas of what is accepted and familiar. However, on what basis do people think or perceive something as ‘accepted and familiar'? Sadly, most of the time we tend to have stereotypical projections towards others who don’t share the same idea/s of what is/are...
Mr. Riccardi also believes that being curious and keen in learning about others’ culture can help extend the border of cultural interaction in order to create a global mindset.

As every culture possesses its own qualities, we can merge and learn from the culture of others by taking and adopting the positive values. Culture should NOT be confined or specified to certain people.

*credits to Google Images*

Here's an example experienced by Atirah. She used to wonder, why do certain Malaysian-Indians adopt ‘Western’ names (for example, from Subramaniam to Michael) and prefer speaking English among themselves instead of Tamil...

*credits to giphy.com*

However, Sociolinguistics taught her that the name change can be traced back even before Malaysia gained its independence. It was actually due to the fact that they are Christian converts who change their names and speak English to feel more belonged in the Christian community.

That is really awesome! It really shows how determined they are to achieve unity and solidarity!  (☆▽☆)

We, Muslims, should also work towards uniting the whole Muslim community. It is sad to see how the world has turned into one where Muslims are mercilessly killing their fellow Muslim brothers without any guilt. In our opinion, this is actually a wake-up call to set aside our differences and opt for unity.

Anyway, we learned an important lesson here, right? Which is to...

NEVER JUDGE OTHERS!
*credits to Google Images*

That is the ultimate reason we decide to create this blog – to find out more about other cultures. We also hope that it will encourage people to be more curious to learn about other different cultures!

We’ll end this post with a wonderful quote from a Danish-American actor, Viggo Mortenson.

Our awesome friendship has started since 3 years ago (let us pray that it will last forever shall we?). We are proud to say that we are students of International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), keenly pursuing a degree in English for International Communication (ENCOM).

Basically, this blog is created for ENCO 2101: Intercultural Communication, and is specially crafted with the intention to share the insights and experiences regarding culture shared by two friends - yours truly!
(^0^)ノ

Before going further, let us introduce ourselves properly first! For your information, both of us are 21 years young and we hail from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

We realize that although we are both from Kuala Lumpur, we actually practice different cultures - most probably influenced by our family and background. Henceforth, we are very excited to explore other cultures as well and see the similarities and differences between them.

We aim to celebrate the diversities of cultures; not to reject or judge anyone or anything. Our motto here is...

NO DISCRIMINATION, please!
╰(▔∀▔)╯

Feel free to share your own experience, thoughts or anything about culture in the comment box below and we hope you’ll enjoy yourself everytime you visit...
